Recording Videos On iOS The Right Way
Apple has never been shy about its privacy-first philosophy. While their restrictive policies can be a hurdle for developers, they ultimately serve a vital purpose: protecting the user.
In November 2025, Apple published an update to its Developer Program License Agreement that is set to shake up the session recording and mobile analytics market. Specifically, Term 3.3.3 A has been revised with a new "catch-all" requirement for user transparency.
The New Transparency Mandate
The update clarifies that any form of screen capture—whether it's a high-res video saved locally or a single frame sent to a server—must be explicitly signaled to the user. If you are capturing data to improve your UI/UX, you can no longer do so in the background without a visual cue.
From Term 3.3.3 A: "If Your Application captures or makes any video, microphone, screen recordings, or camera recordings, whether saved on the device or sent to a server (e.g., an image, photo, voice or speech capture, or other recording) (collectively “Recordings”), a reasonably conspicuous audio, visual or other indicator must be displayed to the user as part of the Application to indicate that a Recording is taking place."
Staying Compliant with IVMetrics
Fortunately, IVMetrics was built for this privacy-first era. We’ve already integrated the necessary tools to help you meet these requirements without disrupting your workflow:
- Built-in Indicators: Leverage our native pop-ups and recording indicators that align perfectly with Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines.
- Custom Manual Control: For teams that want a more tailored experience, you can manually implement your own "reasonably conspicuous" indicators while still utilizing the IVMetrics data engine.
Peace of Mind for Your App
Apple has already approved implementations using the IVMetrics SDK. With a growing number of games and utility apps already on board, you can rest easy knowing that your project features robust data protection and adheres to the latest Apple policies.
Don’t let your app get left behind in the next review cycle. Ensure your recording implementation is as transparent as Apple demands. Switch to IVMetrics now for peace of mind.
